What is RMCT?

The Random Math Competency Test (RMCT) is our internal, competency-based assessment, built on past AMC 10/12 and AIME problems.

Each Random Math level is tied to specific problem ranges and competencies. Unlike a one-time contest, RMCT is designed to reveal what a student has truly internalized: the ability to solve, explain, and reproduce mathematical reasoning under formal conditions. Students write detailed solutions, which we scan and preserve as part of their academic record.

Why RMCT Matters

Contest results are important, but they are not the only measure of growth. A contest score captures performance on one particular day. True competency is deeper: it reflects whether a student can solve problems independently, explain their reasoning clearly, reproduce that understanding consistently, and apply ideas across unfamiliar problems.

A clear mastery pathway

Each level connects to specific problem ranges, so students have a concrete target.

A student may have seen a problem before, but true mastery means solving it again, independently and under formal conditions. RMCT distinguishes familiarity from real competency.

Real, measurable progress

Parents see growth from year to year, not just a single score.

For example, a student who could confidently solve AMC 10 problems through Problem 14 in 2024 may, by 2025, solve through Problem 18 with the same confidence. That progression tells a far richer story than a single contest score.

Earlier coach intervention

A precise diagnostic view of each student's strengths and gaps.

When several students struggle with a topic, that becomes instructional feedback we act on, closing gaps before they show up in a major contest.

A record of written reasoning

Preserved solutions build a longitudinal profile over the years.

This record of problem ranges mastered, written-solution quality, and growth across years can support school counselor communication and recommendation letters with real specificity.

The Process

Taking the RMCT is a simple, guided process.

Nomination

A coach or a parent can nominate a student for the RMCT. The decision to take the test rests with the student and family.

Registration

Once you've decided, you can register online. Enter the student's name, your name and email, and the student's current level; the exam level (one step above) is set automatically.

Fee: A $100 fee applies to tests taken on or after August 1, 2026. The fee is waived if the test is taken before then, or if the student is nominated by a coach.

Scheduling

Pick a test slot from the available dates and times. You'll receive a confirmation email with your slot, followed by a reminder before the test day.

On the test day

  • The exam is up to 5 hours long. Students may finish earlier and submit their answers as soon as they are done.
  • Bring a laptop or an iPad and writing utensils.
  • Bring lunch or some snacks.
  • Students enter their final answers. Step-by-step work is not submitted for grading, though written solutions are still collected and preserved as part of the student's record.

Retakes

If a student does not move up to the next level, they can retake the RMCT: after 3 months if nominated by a parent, or after 1 month if nominated by a coach.

Who's Eligible

RMCT is for students working toward their next level. Students take the exam for the level one step above their current level.
